Things To Do
Southern Queensland Country is a beautiful region with four distinct seasons. It’s the perfect getaway to slow down, relax, breathe the fresh air and savour the country.
You’re never far away from somewhere with a story to tell, thanks to the many historic, heritage-listed buildings in our towns. The historic pubs have been the heart and soul of each town since they were first built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Bull and Barley Inn, Nindigully Pub and the Victoria Hotel in Goondiwindi are fine examples of the period architecture and well worth stopping in to share a drink.
Savour the region’s abundant natural attractions, including the sheer spectacle of Queen Mary Falls cascading over a 40m cliff. Our National Parks are like different worlds, particularly Girraween National Park with its rocky formations making a stark contrast with the springtime wildflowers. Water destinations like Leslie Dam and Bjelke-Petersen Dam are ideal for fishing, boating and spending quality time with the family. Experience some truly spectacular oases of green including Picnic Point with its panoramic views, or the magnificence of spring in the Western Country, when the countryside bursts into colour with native wildflowers.
Winery cellar doors that dot the picturesque countryside offer award-winning verdelhos, semillons, chardonnays, merlots, shirazes and cabernet sauvignons. Other local produce includes cured meats, homemade chocolates and tasty cheeses. There are also many working farms where you and the family can pick the fruit and then sample the delicious finished gourmet products.
There’s plenty of room out on the Western Country, making it perfect for those with a love of outdoor adventure. If you enjoy the peace and tranquility of bushwalking then Bunya Mountains National Park will take your breath away; if you haven’t seen it yet make sure you experience this wonderful example of Australia’s natural heritage.
